Gus Engle
Gus Engle is a true original. His views on life are some of the freshest, most interesting thoughts I’ve heard in a long time. Some would say that it’s his snowboarding that makes him so original. I feel that although snowboarding is his life, it’s his persona that really makes him stand out. Don’t get me wrong, Gus and his ThinkThank crew have changed the definition of “feature”. No longer is the wedge on top of a roller the go to session, with Gus it could be a bench in a parking lot, it could be a couple trees or a cone on your local hill. Gus has opened our eyes to what is possible on a snowboard and I thank him for it.-Gabe Taylor
Do you have a name for your van?
It’s got a couple, but most people call it the Gus bus.
How often does it break down?
‘ol zigzag runs true! But she does strand me on occasion…think I’ve had to push start it about 50
times…the starter is sketchy.
Tell me a story about it breaking down.
one time it broke down in Northern Washington and I spent a week living in the Fred Meyers parking lot. So many chicken strips.
How many miles have you travelled in your that thing?
I’d say about 10,232. It’s at my brothers in Seattle at the moment… drove it up there a couple weeks after the death valley adventure. Next trip is to the homeland! Alaska.
If you could jam out with Woody Guthrie or Bob Dylan who would you choose and why?
Well there is this Bob Dylan quote that goes “a man is a success if he gets up in the morning, and gets to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do”. I’ve got it written on my wall. Anyways let me flip a coin... Woody… that’s my brother’s name.
If you could hang out with Hunter S Thompson or Jimi Hendrix who would you choose?
Lord in heaven sister! That’s like asking to chose between an arm and a leg! My attorney just advised me the most direct route to the American dream would be to take 6 reds, and a blotter and kick it with the godfather of gonzo.

Mikey Leblanc.
How many showers do you take a month?
4+5+2-4-5-1? No shower in the van. But I get them when I can.
When was the last time you used shampoo AND conditioner?
I do believe it was in the year of our lord 2005 in Portland.
What are your thoughts on body odor?
A dog cant smell his own stink. But I’m not a dog so I buy Old Spice.
If you could Snowboard with Jamie Lynn or Scotty Whittlake who would you choose? (and they would be your friend to...)
Well Scotty came to Boarderline camp up here in Alaska one time when I was coaching, and he was at my homies Nasukos that night. kooley was drinking Alizee and he peed in Bogart’s boot. So I guess I’d mark Jamie off my list and shred some Baker.
How many babes does it take to get one tostay the night in your bus with you?
I think there has only been two special van ladies.
If you were a reptile which kind would you be?I would love to be a reptile! No job, get to be naked all the time, my brother was just in Thailand and he saw a lizard chasing a rat. i want to be that lizard.
What’s your favorite old snowboard movie?
Those old TBs were badass…and Burtner’s old flicks.
How many times a day do you think about Snowboarding?
I’ve been reading about brain cycle…guess most brains work in 90 minute cycles. 60 minutes in a high cognitive state and 30 in a low. When its low your brain sees things a little differently and is more receptive to creative thoughts. I hope my brain is more like 45/45. I’ll sit in my van for hours looking at a piece of paper writing down snowboarding ideas.
If you had to chose between one of your balls and your skateboard what would you choose?
I’d keep my balls! I can just buy a new skateboard. Can’t buy a new ball. Well maybe you can.
What was your first snowboard?
Black Snow, when I was a young lad living in Ninilchick.
When do you turn 21?
About 6 months ago I think.
Who is your most famous myspace friend?
Ha! Probably you.
What’s the last book you read?
Fear and Loathing for the hundreth(sp?) time. Now I’m reading some Emerson essays. You know Thoreau was a life long virgin? So smart but he still couldn’t figure out chicks.
If you had to live in another country where would you live?
Holland. That place is mellow.
