Weekend at Kirkwood. This blog is about my recent trip to Kirkwood. I hardly ever write blogs , but this trip was so sweet I wanted to tell you about it. First off, I went to Kirkwood, which is one of my favorite places to ride. Its steep in the right places, the park is good, and its just an all around beautiful place. When you get older it gets more fun to ride with your friends than to ride with famous people, and on this trip my riding partner was my friend Ben Roy who I’ve known for like 10 years. Ben is a kid who loves snowboarding, taking pictures, and is super smart, so he’s awesome to talk to on the chairlift. He always wished he could be a pro, but he’s like 7 feet tall so he always breaks when he crashes and it never worked out. But he’s actually pretty awesome on a snowboard, especially for a giant. Our plan was to spend the weekend shredding Kirkwood, but when we got there the place was all booked up, no accommodations. So we devised a plan of asking someone, anyone we met, if we could stay with them… after we maybe got to know them by taking a few runs with them… you know. But first chair up we got on a triple and this super hot girl came skating up in line and jumps on with us. We start with the small talk, and she seems super cool, so I decided to pop the question. “Hey, ah, where do you live?” “South Lake” she tells us. “Can we stay at your house tonight” I asked, and she said “ok, sure”. Just like that we went from being homeless to hooked up. So we ride all day, do all the log jammers, and mogul launchers we can find, some extreme shredding on The Wall and Cornice chair, we ride til 4 and close the place down. Then we hooked back up with our new friend Mackenzie and head to South Lake. On the drive she fills on in on her scene. She works at a Sushi place at night and a café in the morning, so we now have a hook up on food too. When we get to South Lake and roll into her place it’s a total blast from the past. There are empty beer cans and bottles, all over, piles of snowboard stuff, a TV surrounded by snowboard videos, and Nofx playing on the radio. It was a scene straight out of my first year in Tahoe 15 years ago, pretty sweet. So we have dinner, spend a little time at the casinos where Ben loses all of his money playing poker, and then we crash out on the floor amidst the beer cans and snowboard paraphernalia. The next day is beautiful, and after breakfast with Mackensie at her morning job we head back to Kirkwood. I realize at this point that we should have taken a photo of Mackenzie for this blog, but we spaced it, so just trust me, she’s awesome. Day 2 at Kirkwood is good again. Pretty much the same as day one, except last run Ben hits the firstn jump in the park and does his signature move, heel catch to head smack, and breaks his helmet in two. Luckily, he was fine, so we drove home. The End.
